When you gotta go...

I think, "When you gotta go, you might as well have something pretty to look at..."

However, do you know how hard it is to take pictures in a tiny bath?  Our bath is 2 feet wide and about 4 feet deep.  It is the tiniest 1/2 bath I've ever seen.  But it works and I won't complain because it only takes about seven minutes to clean.

So here are some of the (not so great) pics.  Enjoy.

The walls are a buttery yellow.  With the room being so small, though, the color bounces off each wall, and it is very bright and vibrant.  So we use three 25 watt bulbs in our light fixture.  That helps a ton.

The pictures and the pretties on the toilet back are all from Kirklands.  I love the birdies.  They remind me that spring is coming!

That's one side.

We have a pedestal sink -- which is okay.  I like the space it gives to the small room...but there is NO storage.  (And very little room to decorate!)

We have a beautiful mirror that adds some detail.  You can see the pictures reflected in the mirror.

I like a wicker basket in this bathroom.  It adds to a natural feel of the rest of the accessories - but stays on the neutral side, so not to draw attention to the trash...

Beside the sink top, I have a red hand towel (I don't think you can see that), a print, and a beautiful night light.  Both of these things are from Kirkland's.

Happiness is Home Made.  I agree!

This pic came out pink - but it is actually a dark red.  Gorgeous!

So there you have it.  My powder room.

Hope you all enjoyed!  It's one of my favorite rooms -- and it's right around the corner from the kitchen, so the colors really flow from room to room....

Only By His Grace,

Billie

Isn't it amazing...

Isn't it amazing how talented some people are?  It really astounds me.

Today, I am featuring the handiwork of a friend of mine.  She recently posted on Facebook that after 22 years of starting and stopping - to raise children, work in ministry, be a wife and mother, etc) she had finally finished the crochet bedspread she started in college.

Talk about dedication to a project!  The finished work is gorgeous!

Ready to sneak a peak?  Alright, but you're not going to believe how beautiful it is.

Look at all those tiny stitches...

The detail in the bedspread is amazing to me.

Thank you, Janet, for letting me feature your work.  It is fantastic!

So in exchange for letting me post her work on the blog, she asked for the banana nut muffin recipe I talked about on Tuesday.

Here you go, Janet.  Enjoy, friend!

1 and 1/2 small ripe bananas, smashed
1/2 cup chopped pecans (you can use walnuts, but I had pecans in the pantry)
1 3/4 cups flour (I like Self-rising)
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/3 cup vegetable oil
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg
3/4 cup milk

Combine the dry ingredients, add the wet ingredients.  Mix until combined.  Fold in the mashed banana and pecans - but don't over mix.  The muffins will get tough.

Spray a muffin tin with baker's spray, fill each cup approximately 1/2 full.

Bake at 350 for 20 - 25 minutes.  Test for doneness.

Cover the tops in melted butter, and sprinkle on cinnamon sugar (cinnamon and sugar mixed together)

Catch you girls later!
I've linked to the Tablescape Thursday at Between Naps on the Porch.
Check it out for some inspiration!

Contentment...

One of my New Year's Resolutions was to be more content.  It seems I'm never satisfied.

I'm never satisfied with how far I ran.
Was four miles really all I could muster?
I'm never satisfied with how the clean the bathroom is.
What about that spot of black smudge in the corner behind the door?
I'm never satisfied with my hair.  Should I go a shade darker?
Should I only do highlights in the summer?

Do you ever struggle with this?  I call it a season of discontent.  I don't live there all the time -- but when I'm there....boy am I there.

I recently read the following: "A woman asked her physician why she was seized with longings for the glamorous and faraway.  He replied, "Those are the usual symptoms of abundant comfort in the home and ingratitude in the heart"."

OUCH!  I like the abundant comfort in the home part!  It was the ingratitude in the heart, part, that I didn't like.  Is that really me?  Could there really be ingratitude in my heart?  I sure hope not!

However, I do like a good inspiration now and again.  Because on the flip-side of all my discontent, there is the part of me that needs inspiration.  Do you ever just need inspiration?

I thought I would show you a few things that inspired me today.  I can't say they're things I would put on my wish list... I don't really have a wish-list.  There's not much I wish for.   But these are the pictures today that inspired me.

(All photos are from Ballard's Catalog)

I think I like this photo because of it's simplicity.  I love the iron initials and
of course, the fleur de lis!

What do you think about this little door-topper?  I love it.  I love the iron, the fleur de lis, and the initial.  I could totally see this in our home... Love love love it!

Check out these chandeliers!  Oh my!  I love them.  I love the look!  I love the idea of the.  But I would not want to dust them!  Can you imagine all the crevices where dust could hide?

This one is the most intriguing to me!    My laundry room is functional.  I do use baskets for all my storage.  But I don't have a counter top.  Every house I've lived in I've thought I'd want a counter top.  But I think I would just "decorate" it up to where it wasn't functional for folding or sorting....

One of my favorite things in picture is the trio of extra large safety pins.  Isn't that fun?

This one is my favorite!  Our deck is stained natural color.  We have 2 lounge chairs that are tan.  We have a bistro set that is tan metal with tan chairs.  Last year we bought a large sun umbrella.  In the evening, the sun gets really hot out there.  The umbrella is RED.  The rug we have is tan with black border.

This year, because our patio set is in need of a little update and refreshing.  One cushion has a rip, so the cushions will either have to be replaced, or recovered.  I'm hoping to recover them.  We'll see.

The frame of the furniture is getting a little worn as well.  I'm thinking black would be fantastic!

Then, for the lounge chairs.  Well, they are several years old.  Maybe I can just save a few dollars from the budget and get a couple new ones to replace.  If not, I'm sure I'll refresh them with a couple pillows.

In any case, I'm sure whatever I do this summer, I will be using more red out there.  I do love red on a deck.

Before I go, I thought I would leave you with one more quote:  "The more we count the blessings we have, the less we crave the luxuries we haven't."

Tomorrow, I think I'll show you some of the blessings I have -- and I will try not to focus on the luxuries I haven't.  Even if those luxuries are admirable things -- like a spotless bathroom, or an extra mile.

Good night, friends,

Billie

The bedroom is spic and span!

I know, I know... it's not every one's cup of tea to clean house - but I do get my kicks from a clean house...  Ahhhh.

So I looked over my list,

Wash sheets:            check
Make bed:                check
Dust furniture:          check
Clean ceiling fan:     check
Dust baseboards:    check
Vacuum carpet:       check
Clean mirrors:          check
Fill in that bare spot  check
Take pics:                check
post to blog:             check

and I think I'm finished with my list.  Tomorrow I may show you my bathroom, but we'll see what happens with that.

Join me for a quick tour?  Maybe when we're done I can find time for a power nap!

The color of our walls is SW Harmonic Tan.  It reads as green, but it's supposed to be tan.  I love it!  All of the green choices were, well, too green!

This is the view from the door to the bedroom.

This little table was quite the find!  I went into Annie's Attic one day, and this little table was just sitting there holding something up.  I thought at how the color matched my bedroom furniture and snatched it up.  Guess how much?  $20!  And guess what else?  The front scroll work is hand-carved!  I don't know who made this beautiful table, but I sure love having it in our bedroom!

The Mirror was a gift from my sister when she owned a little Christian bookstore!  There is a cross in the panes of the glass.  I love it so much!

Here is the shot of the detail of that scroll work.

Next is my dresser.  Boy oh boy is it heavy!  Last time I tried to move it I, uh, broke off the back leg.  Mr. Lovey had to fix it.  He wasn't real happy I broke our good furniture, but he fixed it for me!  Thanks, Lovey!

You can see a glimpse of the alcove where Lovey's chest is.  I have another shot of that, but you'll have to wait for it.  :)

I love these little red buffet lamps.  They give enough light in the morning without making the room too bright.  They're really sweet, huh?

These curtains are actually brown, and they match the bed covering perfectly. They really look good against the green tan walls.

This bench has been with us for many, many years.  I actually bought it at Wal-mart about 15 or 16 years ago.  It is solid pine, and cost about $95.  But it is a storage bench!  I keep all my gift wrap in there.  Very handy, and stylish, too.  Uhm... I've been thinking of painting it black.  What do you think?

Here's the alcove...

Mr. Lovey's chest of drawers fits right in there perfectly.

The caption on the picture says, "the sower."  It was a gift from my sister.  The floral was just a few picks I "picked" up and arranged in the vase.  It was easy.  The top of the vase is actually a flower frog.

The teddy bear?  Well....

On our first date, a very young (18 year old) Mr. Lovey, said he needed to put some oil in his car.  He popped the trunk and asked me if I could get the oil for him.  I walked back to the trunk, and there was teddy holding that bottle of 10W30.  It was so sweet!  We had a great time!  He took me to a restaurant down on the river... It was so romantic!

Here's the bed!  So very, very comfy.  I'm feeling the need for a nap.  ZZZzzzzzz.

Above our bed is a very large plant shelf.  I have some pretties up there, too.  Wanna see?  Okay, you talked me into it!

The quilts were family heirlooms.  The small rocker was a gift from my dad to my kiddos.  The small afghan was the first one I made...when I found out I was expecting my baby girl!

Alright, alright, I know what you're thinking.  Where's the art work?

Well.... I'm still working on that.  I'm having trouble finding what I want for this room.  Our ceilings are so high, and our furniture has those rounded tops... I just find things that are too big, or too small.  Unwilling to compromise on what I really like, I'll just wait.

But rest assured, when I find something fabulous, you'll be the second to know.  (I'll have to let Mr. Lovey know first. :) )

Also, many people ask me why I don't have the bed on the wall where the dresser is.  Well... I did for a while, but honestly, this way gives us a more open room because it practically removes the chest from the room.

Okay, so the recap.  From the door way.

From the right corner:

And from the left corner:

Hope you enjoyed your tour.  Now for my nap!

See you tomorrow!

Billie

Is it spring yet...?

Is it spring yet?  Cause I feel like cleaning!

Is it just me, or do you, too, ever just get the hankering to clean something?  For me, that feeling never stops!  I know, it's sick!  It's like I went through nesting when I was pregnant and never stopped.

It's a snow day here - which means - kiddos are home, playing with Christmas toys and sledding down our big hill.  Meanwhile...I'm still in my jammies cause that's how I like to clean house the best!

Since 8:30 this morning I've already made homemade banana pecan breakfast muffins, finished two loads of laundry, and reorganized my closet.  In fact, I have two more bags of stuff to take to Good Will. Yeah!

Next on my list is my master bedroom.  It is in such a state of chaos I can't even stand it.  When I redecorated Kayla's room last week, all of her "overflow" over-flowed right into my room.  Then the laundry piled up - right in my room.  Then we moved some furniture... now there is a big bare spot - right in my room.

So today, I mean to rectify all of these situations -- and clean, clean, clean, clean, clean!

My check list?  Okay, but you're asking for it:

___ Wash sheets
___ Make bed
___ Dust furniture
___ Clean ceiling fan
___ Dust baseboards
___ Vacuum carpet
___ Clean mirrors
___ Fill in that bare spot
___ Take pics
___ post to blog

Don't know if I'll get to my master bathroom today.  I'm hoping so.  It's really part of my bedroom -- but it is a bit daunting to think of totally cleaning two rooms today... but it would feel great, wouldn't it.

Okay - I've talked myself into it.  I'll do it.

For now, I think I'll gather my cleaning supplies, my vacuum, and my ipod.

I'll see you guys in a few hours - when everything is spic-and-span.

Enjoy your day!

Billie

Expect the unexpected...

Good evening, everyone!  I trust you had a blessed day.

I told you yesterday that I would probably blog about my little cubicle office space.  Well, that didn't exactly happen today.  Several things came up -- and then got in the way of my blogging fun.  So I had to actually work today.  So, you'll get to see something else this time.

Baby, it's cold outside!  And I had a lousy day at work!  What goes better with a cold, lousy day?  Home made potato soup.

Thought I'd share my recipe with you.  Now, I'm no cook -- but I do make a mean potato soup.  Comfort in a bowl!  Let me tell you...

NOTE:  This soup is by no means healthy.  In fact, it is loaded with sodium - so if you're on a low sodium diet, you might want to tweak the recipe to fit your needs.

First, I start with about 8 cups of cold water in my stock pot.  Very important to start with cold water.  I'm not sure why -- but I always start with cold water.  Probably because I don't want to wait for the hot water.  To that I add 4 chicken bouillon cubes. That's where the flavor comes from (and the sodium.)

Next I add in 1 cup chopped carrots.  I like baby carrots because they're already pealed, and they're sweeter.

After the carrots, I add about 1/2 cup diced white onion.  That's about 1/2 a small onion.  Diced finely, but not too finely.

After the onions, I add 2 stalks of diced celery.  I like celery, but not a large amount.  Of course, you can always add more if you like.

I throw all that into the pot of chicken "stock."  Then get your potatoes ready.  I use 6 or 7 smallish potatoes (about the size of my fist.)  I don't peal them.  I just wash them and scrub them with my veggie brush.  Then I start the dicing process.  I like about 1/2 inch cubes.

All of that into the pot!  Yummy goodness!
Let it simmer over medium high heat for about 15 minutes until the root vegetables become fork tender.  Don't over cook, or they'll get mushy.

While your potatoes and veggies are cooking, you'll want to make a slurry.  A slurry is different from a rue because you just mix your milk and flour in a bowl and then pour it into your soup to thicken it.  A rue is where you brown flour in butter (or such) before adding liquid to make a gravy, or sauce.

I use 1/3 cup of flour -- Self rising or plain, it doesn't matter.
I used 1/2 cup of 1% milk.

Put them together in a bowl with a tightly fitting lid -- cover and shake, shake, shake, until all the flour is absorbed into the milk.

After your potatoes and other veggies are fork tender, you slowly pour in your slurry.

Give it a little stir -- and don't be alarmed if you see little "flour lumps" forming in your soup.  Don't worry!  They'll cook in and disappear, and thicken your soup.

Cover your soup and let it simmer on low for approximately 5 - 10 minutes.  At this point, I always add a sprinkle of dried rosemary.  I only use about 1/8 teaspoon.  It's enough to flavor your soup, but not over powering.  I also add freshly ground black pepper at this point.

When your soup has thickened to your liking, serve it up!  Home made biscuits are da bomb with this soup... but bread or rolls work well, too.

Now for the unexpected bonus:

This is just something I came up with to use when we have company or guests for parties or holidays.

I always have lots of coffee made; both regular and decaf.  But sometimes it's hard to keep reminding everyone which carafe has which coffee in it.  I tried labels on the carafe, but they got torn off, or dripped on...

So, now I have these sweet little plaques I use.  They were simple to make.  Two small frames, some scrapbook paper of your choice, and my printer.  I just printed out a regular and decaf "label" on card stock, cut it out and glued it to the scrapbook paper.  Slid them in the frames, and I was done.  So easy!  So, so easy!

Enjoy your night!  Hope to see you all soon!

What to expect...

Hey, y'all, I just wanted to give you an idea of what's coming up this week.

Because I work part-time outside the home, I thought it would be fun to show you pics of where I work.  My husband has been self-employed for the past 10 years (yeah!) and I recently shut down my freelance graphic design business to go to work for his company.

I thought it would fun for you guys to see where I am when I'm not here in blog land.  I work for The Mirazon Group, LLC based in Louisville, KY.  It is an independent IT consulting firm that specializes in Virtualization and SAN sales and support.

We are expecting some snow this week -- forecast is for 1 - 8 inches (that narrows it down).  So if we have snow days I may or may not be in my cubicle, but if I am I will be taking pictures and posting them to my blog.

Of course, since I work with my husband I am pretty free to decorate my space as I wish -- and take a few minutes to take a few pics... (I'm sure THAT won't draw any questions....)  But I don't mind.

So be on the look out for that in the next couple of days.

Also, I might get to another room of the house -- maybe the master bedroom, or the basement family room.  We'll see...

Daily chores such as laundry and cooking may get in the way of all my blogging fun, but I'm sure I'll have some time...

Can't wait to see you again,

Billie
